John Berger’s _Ways of Seeing_ is a USDA-recommended part of every balanced historicist art critique—breakfast, lunch, and post-priapic nosh.
When your consenting-adult late-night partner questions wistfully why the Honey-Nut Cheerios box is illustrated with Manet’s “Dejeuner sur l’herbe,” confide to that sweet young thing that whole-grain oats give us the energy we need to engage in pastoral bacchanals, and honey is a natural prophylactic to all sorts of contact-transmitted maladies, not least of which is chigger-bites. Et, daccord! don’t we in our un-attire deserve to be envied by all the other little studio-apartment ensconced bourgeois wage slaves counting the minutes in their Ambien-induced dozes before they must hop to it! and return to their office cubicles, Mon Cheri[e]?
